A happy moment

One of the most happy moments in the process of making my handmade jewelry, is when getting back from supply shopping with hurting feet, empty wallet and a little disappointed because I never have enough, I empty my small and big bags on my working table, forming a pile of colours, shapes and materials that can bring a big smile back to my face. Until that moment I only have a rough idea about what I want to make. But in the sight of this pile more ideas start poppping in my head. It is true that many of my jewelry started this way, because I saw some of my newly bought materials lying randomly side by side in perfect combinations.

Europe and Etsy / Η Ευρώπη και το Etsy

On a former post I wrote about Etsy and European Street Team. Let me tell you what this is exactly: Etsy is supposed to be an international site but the truth is it has an american character for the moment. So some European artists formed this team in order to promote their shops and let international and european buyers know that there is a lot of talent in our neighborhood. Of course there are many other Etsy teams formed with various criteria. By joining EST I got to meet a lot of interesting people, women I should say. Yes, our team is completely dominated by women, I think I only met one guy so far. Well, I never thought it would be so much fun. We meet every day, in the EST forum to talk about crafting, kids, husbands, the weather, movies, shoes, recipes, bad days, good days, this and that. It is comforting to know there is somebody in the other side of Europe who is through the same situations as you and who can make you feel better with a few words.

The more serious business matters we leave them for our live chats every ten days. From the beginning I was impressed about how active this team seems to be. We all have realized that the way to better promote our shops passes through the promotion of the European Street Team as a whole. Making treasuries is our favorite game. Etsy gives every seller or buyer the possibility to make small collections of 16 photos of favorite items. And of course we grab the opportunity to promote each other. Even those of us who don't have the time to make one, click with enthusiasm on other members' treasuries to help them go up in the row of popularity and get more visibility. I was honored to see some of my handmade jewelry in beautiful treasuries of fellow European artists, two of which made it to the front page of Etsy. Believe me, it's a huge thing, and not easy at all to happen.

Σε ένα προηγούμενο post έγραψα για τοEtsy και την Ευρωπαϊκή Ομάδα (European Street Team). Ας εξηγήσω περί τίνος πρόκειται ακριβώς: Το Etsy θεωρητικά είναι ένα διεθνές site αλλά η αλήθεια είναι ότι μέχρι στιγμής έχει περισσότερο αμερικανικό χαρακτήρα. Έτσι κάποιοι Ευρωπαίοι καλλιτέχνες έφτιαξαν αυτήν την ομάδα προκειμένου να προωθήσουν τα ηλεκτρονικά τους καταστήματα και να μάθουν στους διεθνείς και Ευρωπαίους αγοραστές ότι υπάρχει πολύ ταλέντο στην γειτονιά μας. Βεβαίως υπάρχουν πολλές άλλες ομάδες στο Etsy δημιουργημένες με διάφορα κριτήρια. Μπαίνοντας στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ομάδα γνώρισα πολλούς ενδιαφέροντες ανθρώπους, γυναίκες θα έπρεπε να πω. Η ομάδα μας κυριαρχείται ολοκληρωτικά από γυναίκες, νομίζω ότι έχω συναντήσει μόνο έναν άντρα ως τώρα. Λοιπόν, ποτέ δεν φανταζόμουν ότι θα είναι τόσο διασκεδαστικό. Συναντιόμαστε καθημερινά στο forum της ομάδας για να μιλήσουμε για αυτά που φτιάχνουμε, παιδιά, συζύγους, τον καιρό, ταινίες, παπούτσια, συνταγές, καλές ημέρες, κακές ημέρες, γι'αυτά και για εκείνα. Είναι παρηγορητικό να ξέρεις ότι υπάρχει κάποιος στην άλλη άκρη της Ευρώπης που περνάει τις ίδιες καταστάσεις με σένα και που μπορεί να σε κάνει να νιώσεις καλύτερα με λίγες λέξεις. Τα πιο σοβαρά "business" θέματα, τα αφήνουμε για τις ζωντανές μας συζητήσεις κάθε 10 μέρες.


Από την αρχή εντυπωσιάστηκα με το πόσο ενεργή φαίνεται να είναι αυτή η ομάδα. Έχουμε όλοι καταλάβει ότι ο καλύτερος τρόπος να προωθήσουμε τα καταστήματά μας περνάει μέσα από την προώθηση της Ευρωπαϊκής Ομάδας σαν σύνολο. Το να φτιάχνουμε treasuries είναι το αγαπημένο μας παιχνίδι. Στα αγγλικά treasury σημαίνει ένα σύνολο από πολύτιμα πράγματα. Το Etsy δείνει την ευκαιρία σε πωλητές και αγοραστές να φτιάξουν μικρές συλλογές από 16 φωτογραφίες αγαπημένων τους αντικειμένων που πουλιούνται στο site. Και βεβαίως αρπάζουμε την ευκαιρία να προωθήσουμε ο ένας τον άλλον. Ακόμα και αυτοί που δεν έχουν τον χρόνο να φτιάξουν μία treasury κλικάρουν μετά μανίας σε αυτές που έχουν φτιάξει τα άλλα μέλη ώστε να τις βοηθήσουν να ανέβουν στην σειρά δημοτικότητας και να γίνουν πιο "ορατές". Είχα την τιμή να δω κάποια από τα χειροποίητα κοσμήματά μου σε treasuries φίλων Ευρωπαίων καλλιτεχνών, δύο από τις οποίες κατάφεραν να φτάσουν στην πρώτη σελίδα του Etsy. Πιστέψτε με, είναι κάτι πολύ σημαντικό και καθόλου εύκολο να συμβεί.

Grandma's hair barette

If you ever become a regular visitor to this blog you will soon find out how much I love old things. But not only old, even those that just have a vintage style. But the ones that truly come from the past, I really adore them. They bear an irresistible charm on them. They belong to times where people took the time to create beautiful handmade things of great craftmanship just because mass production was an unknown word.

I have such an object which I keep like a treasure. It's my grandma's hair barette. I don't know if it has any real money value but for me it's precious. My grandma (who has passed the way) was born circa 1905 and lived most of her life in Constantinople.This hair barette belonged to her when she was a child so you see it's an antique. It is hand carved and made of tortoiseshell. I love the design, it looks so romantic. I like to think how precious this object would be to a girl in a time that big stores full of women accessories sounded like science fiction. Isn't it just beautiful?

What is Etsy? / Τί είναι το Etsy?

Etsy was created in June 2005. It is an international site where artists and crafters from all over the world sell their creations. It was created to support independent creators in a world where mass produced things rule. If you are a consumer who appreciates talent, diversity, originality, hands work, this is the place for you. A lot of gorgeous items, from bags, clothes and jewelry to soaps, candles, knitted items and paintings, with hundreds of other kinds in between, are for sale on Etsy.
But what makes Etsy special is the sense of community it gives to those who participate in it. On Etsy forums you can meet a lot of supportive people and chat for fun or business with fellow artists or buyers. I was never a forum type of person. Until I opened my Etsy shop a couple of months ago, I hadn't posted a single word to any type of forum. Now, I can hardly stay away from Etsy forums and especially the EST (European Street Team) thread where I meet my friends from all over Europe every day. But more on EST in a following post.

Το Etsy δημιουργήθηκε τον Ιούνιο του 2005. Είναι ένα διεθνές site όπου καλλιτέχνες και χειροτέχνες από όλο τον κόσμο πουλάνε τις χειροποίητες δημιουργίες τους. Φτιάχτηκε για να υποστηρίξει ανεξάρτητους δημιουργούς σε έναν κόσμο όπου τα μαζικά παραγώμενα πράγματα κυριαρχούν. Αν είστε ένας καταναλωτής που εκτιμά το ταλέντο, την διαφορετικότητα, την πρωτοτυπία, την χειροποίητη εργασία, αυτό είναι ένα μέρος για σας. Πολλά καταπληκτικά πράγματα από χειροποίητα κοσμήματα, τσάντες και ρούχα μέχρι χειροποίητα σαπούνια, κεριά, πλεκτά αντικείμενα και πίνακες με εκατοντάδες άλλα είδη ενδιάμεσα, βρίσκονται προς πώληση στο Etsy.
Αυτό όμως που κάνει το Etsy ιδιαίτερο είναι η αίσθηση της κοινότητας που δίνει σε όσους συμμετέχουν σε αυτό. Στα forums του Etsy μπορείς να συναντήσεις πολλούς ανθρώπους πρόθυμους να βοηθήσουν και να κουβεντιάσεις για επαγγελματικά θέματα ή για ευχαρίστηση με "συναδέρφους" ή αγοραστές. Δεν ήμουν ποτέ ο τύπος που μπαίνει για κουβέντα στα forums. Μέχρι που άνοιξα το κατάστημά μου στο Etsy πριν περίπου δύο μήνες δεν είχα δημοσιέυσει ούτε μία λέξη σε κάποιο forum. Τώρα δύσκολα μπορώ να μείνω μακριά από τα forums του Etsy και ειδικά αυτό της EST (European Street Team) όπου μπορώ καθημερινά να συναντήσω τους φίλους μου από όλη την Ευρώπη. I am crazy about everything that has to do with home decor. So every time I find something I like, I will share it with you here.
I also love, as most women do, clothes and accessories, so if I see something really cool and especially handmade by indie creators I will post it here.
But not only that. Crafts, arts, design, beautiful handmade objects, images, colours, every little thing that can make you look and feel special or make your space look better or make a moment in your day feel more sweet, can find a place here.
